‘Geluid vh Noorden’ (‘Sound of the North’) is an artistic tribute to the groundbreaking scientific innovations, buildings and discoveries from the three Northern provinces of the Netherlands that have made their mark worldwide.
This multidisciplinary project brings to life the profound impact of northern ingenuity through a symphony of poetry, photography, music and lyrics. It captures the spirit of numerous Northern inventions and breakthroughs, demonstrating in a compelling way how genius has flourished here for centuries.
The great achievements from the North are made audible and tangible in an unprecedented manner. Experience, hear and feel the monumental power of the Wouda Pumping Station, the timeless precision of Eise Eisinga’s Planetarium and the life-saving Heart-Lung Machine by Jan Nico Homan van der Heide. Listen to the soft hiss of Lou Ottens’ Compact Cassette, the purifying effect of Willem Kolff’s Dialysis Machine and experience the magnetizing fascination of the very first electric car by Sibrandus Stratingh.
The project uniquely allows intimate ‘listening’ to the ‘inaudible’ vibrations of Ben Feringa’s Nanomachines, to the icy comets in Jan Hendrik Oort’s Oort Cloud, to Frits Zernike’s Phase Contrast Microscope and lets you irresistibly sway to the waves of the Big Bang thanks to LOFAR.
Experience wireless connection through Jaap Haartsen’s ingenious Bluetooth network. Other ‘unheard’ listening highlights include Hessel de Vries’ clever Carbon Dating and Heike Kamerlingh Onnes’ lightning-fast Superconductivity.
The premiere of ‘Geluid vh Noorden’ is on April 18, 2026 (FORUM Groningen), featuring a unique concert, the presentation of the album and a substantial and beautifully designed book. Additional performances will follow the premiere.
